There are several different ways that farmed oysters can be raised in the water.
The ‘Cage System” is where oysters are placed in bags or cages, that are then sunk to the bottom of the river or bay. The cages help keep the oysters from direct contact with the river floor, which allows them to have better water flow and more access to food. The bags and cages are sorted periodically to keep from overcrowding and to the collect the market sized oysters.
