DESCRIPTION:Patuxent River Appreciation Day (PRAD) is an annual festival\, which creates awareness\, recognition\, and promotion of the economic\, social\, recreational\, cultural and historical impact of the tributaries and environs of the Patuxent River and the basin through which it flows. \nThe festival brings together\, and reflects the continuing commitment of the community\, Calvert County Commissioners\, the Calvert Marine Museum\, and other organizations which share a desire to preserve the Patuxent River and to celebrate its positive influence on the area’s quality of life\, in the past\, present and the future. \nBy bringing these people together in public forum annually\, PRAD hopes to continue the interest in the support of the environmental programs and tourism activities surrounding the Patuxent River and its tributaries.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of oyster season on the Chesapeake Bay at one of the oldest and most popular oyster festivals in the United States\, the annual U.S. Oyster Festival. Always the third weekend in October\, the Oyster Festival is famous for its amazing seafood\, including plentiful wild harvest and farm raised oysters prepared in various ways. Enjoy live music\, local foods\, arts\, crafts\, craft beer tasting\, and fun for the whole family. \nThe event also includes the National Oyster Cook-Off\, where individuals and chefs compete to prepare the best tasting recipes in various categories ranging from Hors d’oeuvres\, soups\, stews and main dishes. \nThe highlight of the annual festival is the U.S. National Oyster Shucking Championships which attracts competitors from around the USA to compete for the title of the U. S Oyster Shucking Champion. The U.S. winner goes on to compete for the World Shucking Championship in Galway\, Ireland. \nGates are open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday.
